This week’s Wordbound prompt was: Use numbers in an interesting way. It took me a couple days to decide what to do with this prompt. I thought about working it into one of the stories I’ve been working on, but I didn’t like any of my ideas for those, so I decided on a short story instead.
“This is a terrible idea,” Becca said.
“No, it’s an amazing idea,” Vanessa argued.
“It’s both,” Andy said, “And it’s too late to argue about it. We’re here.”
The three women looked up at the bright, neon sign above the bar’s door.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” Becca asked.
“Absolutely,” Vanessa answered. They walked inside where there were already several groups of three clustered around the bar.
“I’ll go check us in,” Vanessa said, walking away toward the man sitting at a table across the room. She came back a few minutes later, holding a small yellow envelope with a large number one on the back.
The man at the front of the room stepped up onto the karaoke stage and grabbed the microphone.
“Are you ready to get started?” he yelled. Everyone cheered loudly.
“You all know what this is about,” he said, “The first team to solve all the clues and get to the final location wins $30,000. You all have the first clue.”
He paused to look at his watch.
“And you can open them in three…two…one!” he yelled.
Every team scrambled to open their envelopes. Vanessa tore their envelope apart and held up the small slip of paper for all of them to see. Andy read it aloud.
“Our rivals we will always beat, we will never accept defeat, just look for the worst place to be, it’s as easy as one, two, three,” Andy said.
“What the hell does that mean?” Vanessa said.
“I know where we have to go,” Becca said with a resigned sigh.
Writing Goal Updates
This definitely wasn’t the best writing week. I didn’t write much outside of working on this week’s prompt. I tried setting a goal of 1000 words a day again, but I think it was just too much this week and I got too distracted. I think this week I’ll go with a goal of 500 words a day. Hopefully I’ll write more than that, but I just need to get back on track and in the habit of writing something every day.
